Forget swimming pools, rooftop terraces, porte cochères or even helicopter landing pads. The latest amenity at high-end apartment buildings in the U.S. is a charging station for electric vehicles. A recent study from Bloomberg New Energy Finance found that sales of electric vehicles will hit 41 million by 2040 to account for 35 percent of car sales.
Developers are betting big on the electric-car market taking off and, as a result, are installing electric charging stations at high-end buildings nationwide. Among those with EV charging stations in New York City include the Related Companies’ 70 Vestry (the 46-unit Tribeca condo will have eight charging stations), Adam America Real Estate’s 610 Warren in Boerum Hill (the 31-unit building will have access to 10 EV stations) and Ironstate Development’s Urby Staten Island (the 900-unit rental will have a slew of “green” amenities, such as 300 parking spaces and electric car chargers).
