Midtown West or Clinton (also affectionately called Hell’s Kitchen), situated between 34th Street and 59th Street, from Eighth Avenue to the Hudson River, is one of Manhattan’s bustling neighborhood filled with popular eateries and destinations like Times Square and Theatre Row.
This area is home to a mix of young professionals, longtime residents, aspiring actors, artists and other entertainers who treasure the proximity to Broadway theatres.
Many famous actors and entertainers have resided there, including James Dean, Madonna, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Alicia Keys, and Sylvester Stallone. This is due in large part to the Actors Studio on West 44th, which rose to prominence under Lee Strasberg and is famed for its method acting style. Times Square is not just a must-see for tourists but also a central hub for getting around New York City, offering connections to a number of subway lines. Headed west towards Ninth Avenue, you’ll find a row of low-key bars, varied eateries from Thai, Indian to Mexican and New American, shops and recently-opened galleries. Given the abundance of restaurants, there is a block on 46th between Eighth and Ninth Avenues that is deemed “Restaurant Row.” Going westward, you can enjoy a nice stroll along the Hudson River and a stunning view of the U.S.S. Intrepid. The west side of Manhattan is also a favorite area for those who like cycling, rollerblading, jogging or anyone with a fitness mindset. Other notable spots include Worldwide Plaza with attractive outdoor plazas at Eighth Avenue and 49th Street, the “green” and architecturally-divine Hearst Tower at 56th Street and Eighth Avenue. And blocks away are two of the city’s three most important transportation gateways, making travel to just about anywhere convenient: the Pennsylvania/Long Island Rail Road station and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Bus Terminal.
