According to Bloomberg, Elon Musk’s The Boring Company emerged victorious in a bid to build an underground transportation system in Fort Lauderdale.
The system will be known as Las Olas Loop, and consist of two tunnels running 2.5 miles from downtown Fort Lauderdale to the beach.
Passengers of the transit system would be driven in dedicated Tesla cars (private cars won’t be allowed). Construction is estimated to take one year once the city gives the final green light.
Miami, which is said to be seeking a similar system, is now finishing pre-development and preparing an agreement for a monorail and rapid mass transit line that will cross the MacArthur Causeway, connecting Downtown Miami to Miami Beach. The expected completion of a 3.45-mile monorail is 2026.
In parallel to the ongoing work for the Beach Corridor Causeway Extension, the Beach Corridor Project Development and Environment study are underway for all three segments of the corridor.
“Mobility is something that is extremely important for any community,” said Miami Beach Public Works director Jose Gomez. “We’re growing more and more every year and we have to be able to move people and facilitate them going from point to point. So, anytime we can do that means the good for the city.”
