Miami-Dade’s SMART Rapid Transit Plan is on its way

Posted by:

Miami-Dade County’s plan to build six new transit corridors advanced in 2020, and five of the six corridors now have a mode of transportation selected.

The mass transit expansion is known as the SMART Plan.

Here’s a look at what commissioners chose to build for each of the corridors:

  • Beach Corridor – A monorail will run 3.45 miles, from downtown Miami’s Omni station to 5th Street in South Beach.

  • Northeast Corridor – Commuter rail has been selected, with trains running on Brightline’s tracks from downtown Miami to Aventura.

  • South Corridor – Set to run 20 miles from Dadeland to Florida City, it will be operated by Bus Rapid Transit. Financing from the local, State, and Federal Government is in place, and groundbreaking is expected shortly.

  • North Corridor – The 9.5-mile Metrorail Purple Line would run along NW 27th Avenue to the Broward County line, with a stop at Hard Rock Stadium and connecting to the existing Metrorail system.

  • East-West Corridor – The line will run from downtown Miami to the Tamiami park-and-ride at the edge of the Everglades. A second phase will run from the Dolphin park-and-ride in Doral to the Miami Intermodal Center at MIA.

  • Kendall Corridor –  To run from the Dadeland area to Krome Avenue – no selection has been made.
